The Breakout Role Podcast – Tom Hanks in Mazes and Monsters

The Breakout Role Podcast returns! In the latest episode, Luke and Jess watch Mazes and Monsters , a morality tale about the dangers that tabletop roleplaying games pose to our innocent youths, starring young Tom Hanks in his first lead role!

Made during the D&D moral panic of the 1980s, the film sees Hanks star as Robbie Wheeling, a college student devoted to the game ‘Mazes and Monsters’, similar to but legally distinct from Dungeons and Dragons. Robbie seems to have it all; friends, a girlfriend, beautiful curly hair – but will his devotion to the satanic dangers of a board game for nerds tear away his grip on reality?

Why does a tabletop RPG cause young Tom to lose his mind? Why didn’t we watch his short-lived sitcom Bosom Buddies instead? The answers to these questions and more can be found in #TomHanksBreakout!
