This year the IFI Spotlight is going online. The Spotlight is an annual event from the Irish Film Institute which present a focus on Irish film and television’s year in review. The Institute will be looking back at 2019 to observe current trends in production, distribution and consumption of new work with a number of guests via Zoom and tickets to the first event are available to some reserve now.
This year as the IFI Spotlight goes online, a series of live free Zoom events will see a range of film and TV experts will explore aspects of the Irish film and TV industry and will engage with participants in a post-presentation discussion. In the first event on 12th June , two prominent voices in Irish film academia will discuss the current landscape of Irish film.
Dr Roddy Flynn of DCU and Dr Tony Tracy NUIG will participate in a review of film and TV in 2019.
From the wide spread success of The Favourite to our current state of play it has been a busy year and a half in Iris media. As noted by the IFI 2019 offered as varied an output in Irish film as ever including comedies; dark dramas; a varied range of documentaries; and a notable number of works written/directed by women. Flynn and Tracy will survey this output alongside industry initiatives and developments and look at how the industry and audiences might respond in a post-Covid landscape.
Dr Roddy Flynn is an Associate Professor at the School of Communications, DCU where he currently chairs the MA in Contemporary Screen Studies. He has researched and written extensively on many aspects of Irish film, media and audiovisual policy.
Dr Tony Tracy is lecturer in Film Studies at Huston School of Film & Digital Media, NUI Galway. His research focuses on Irish cinema, masculinities and silent film. He is the co-editor (with Roddy Flynn) of the annual review of Irish Film and TV which appears in the Estudios Irlandeses journal.
The pair are co -authors of the compendious Historical Dictionary of Irish Cinema (2019).
