Traditionally, the Fastnet Film Festival takes place annually in Schull, County Cork, a selection of cinema under the shadow of Mount Gabriel. In May 2021, the festival will be delivered entirely online, with over 300 shorts from Ireland and abroad available to view completely free this week.

Now set to host its twelfth edition, the First Cut! Youth Film Festival continues from tomorrow in its work showcasing and encouraging the next generation of Irish filmmakers. The annual Youghal-based event presents films in all genres by rising filmmakers, schools and youth groups as well as offering an insight into the Irish industry through workshops and talks by film pros.

 

The First Cut! Youth Film Festival 2021 will be taking place online from April 17th – May 9th. Accessible to participants from Ireland and abroad, the festival will provide three weeks of packed programming for young filmmakers from the ages of 12 up to 24, with screenings, workshops and talks in a safe and inclusive virtual format.

Revolutions isn’t just a documentary about the sport of roller derby in Ireland, it goes so much deeper. It serves as a snapshot into the lives of young, ambitious people struggling to find a way through the recession in Ireland too. McGann spent 6 years filming the ups and downs of the (then) two Irish roller derby teams and their fearless spirit.

The intense, aggressive and expressive sport of roller derby is one that’s seen increasing popularity in recent years, with a burgeoning scene in Ireland among young women looking for an outlet. Irish roller derby is the subject of Revolutions, a documentary by Irish director Laura McGann, which was shown last year at the Galway Film Fleadh. This June, the film will have a wider release across Ireland, and the Irish Film Institute will be hosting a special opening night screening to mark the occasion.
