It’s Eggers over-easy at the Light House this Easter

All four films by director Robert Eggers will be screening in Smithfield this April as the Light House have announced that they’ll be hosting ‘Easter Eggers’, a marathon session of the horror fiend’s filmography. This Easter Sunday they’ll be giving thanks and praise to the new king of folklore, mythology and horror, with tickets to The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman and Nosferatu in 35mm on offer throughout April 20th.

Live deliciously with Eggers first feature The Witch, kicking off the day at 1pm on Easter Sunday. One of the earliest reviews on Film In Dublin, we called Eggers’ film ‘an instant horror classic’ on its release in 2016, and Black Philip has only bleated his way further into the hearts of horror fans since. An isolated Puritan family in 1630s New England comes unraveled by the forces of witchcraft and possession in a star-making turn by Anya Taylor-Joy.

Next up in the afternoon at 3.15pm is the unlikely buddy comedy between beloved weirdos Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse. A ‘film that grapples with the absurdity of machismo’, Eggers’ tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s is equal parts haunting and hysterical, as its oddball stars let loose in cursed confinement.

Plus it gave us that confusion from Pattinson, from talking to Dee Molumby about the Smithfield cinema.

Though there is horror to all Eggers films to date, they do weave between other themes and genres, and his third feature is more of an action odyssey, albeit one under a gloomy cloud. It’s a berzerker rampage of revenge, as Viking prince Alexander Skarsgård sets out on his quest to avenge his father’s murder. With an all-star cast that also includes Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and returning Eggers players Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe. Northman kicks off at 6pm.

Finally under cover of night, the director’s latest film Nosferatu will be screened in 35mm from 9pm. Eggers take on the cinematic vampire classic is a extended nightmare of repressed Victorian sexuality, a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.
