Naughty or Nice arrives to the Light House for 2024

Naughty or Nice seems to arrive earlier each year, but we’re not complaining. The Light House Cinema’s special season of Christmas classics has been announced for 2024, with 18 features set to have your cinematic stocking absolutely stuffed. From the 29th November all the way until New Year’s Eve you can see some of your all time faves and some new hits too.

The seasonal standards like Die Hard, Muppets Christmas Carol, Home Alone et al will be gracing screens in Smithfield as they do every year, while newer Christmas-set cinema like The Green Knight, Tangerine and The Holdovers have been added to the fray.

The Light House will be pouring the mulled wine to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, not quite the movie that originated the song, but the movie that originated the song without also have blackface in it (do not watch Holiday Inn folks). Tune in, press on and have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. There’s another anniversary of a classic in store, as Satoshi Kon’s wonderful three wise men reimagining Tokyo Godfathers marks 20 years since its release.

Cinema Book Club, the Light House’s pairing of movies with the lit on which they were based, will be taking part in the festivities, with a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and a look at the novella that inspired it, Dream Story. See Kubrick’s lusty thriller and final film, then journey back to early 20th century Vienna as Arthur Schnitzler walks through a pyschosexual city tour that’s captivating even without having Tom Cruise complain to his soon-to-be-ex wife that weed makes her too aggressive. Just don’t forget the secret password, Fidelio. See When Harry Met Sally to ring in the New Year, and not because you’re lonely, and not because it’s New Year’s Eve, but because when you realize you want to watch the best romcom of all time, you want the best romcom of all time to start as soon as possible.

Dublin institution the Small Trans Library have been invited to dinner this year and they’ve come with a cracker. They’re hosting a sho-ho-howing of Alice Maio Mackey’s Aussie horror Carnage for Christmas. When true-crime podcaster and sleuth Lola visits her hometown at Christmas for the first time since running away and transitioning, the vengeful ghost of a historical murderer and urban legend seemingly arises to kill again. Lola must solve the case before her community is slaughtered. She’s up against not only a psychotic killer, but also a town haunted by secrets.
