A hub of indie ideas at the Dublin Independent Film Festival this September

Independent films from around the world will be arriving in Smithfield this September. The Dublin Independent Film Festival will be host to a midweek celebration of features and shorts, held in the Light House Cinema this September 3-4.

The Indie Film Festival aims to bring groundbreaking shorts and features by international and local filmmakers alike, and this year they’ll be showing work from the US, Senegal, Kazakhstan and more, including a dedicated programme of shorts by Irish directors.

Their screening programme spans a wide range showcasing the creations of upcoming talents and emerging artists passionate about the art of cinema. Dublin Independent Film Festival aims to become a cultural hub where the artists and audience can interact and exchange ideas. On Tuesday and Wednesday the 3rd and 4th of September, they’ll be showing two feature films, and two programmes of shorts.

First up for features will be Slide, made by icon of indie animation Bill Plympton. This is a musical comedy Western, set in a corrupt logging town where Slide, a mysterious guitar player, appears to battle the evil mayor and his equally selfish twin brother, with the aid of a giant Hellbug. Check out the trailer and you’ll see that it looks as eclectic and interesting as that sounds.

Also showing is Slovak indie Invalid, a dark comedy about revenge directed by Jonas Karasek. Grumpy handyman Laco loses everything to a group of mobsters. Now wheelchair-bound and with his life spiraling, it’s his new friend Gabo, a local Roma who helps Laco see things with a new perspective.

In addition to international shorts, you can also see work by upcoming Irish directors Kate Stanley Brennan, Jackson Lennon, Michael Antonio Keane, Conan Boers, Zoe Boers, Craig Moore and Steve Hall and Michelle Ryan. A selection of awards are set to be given out at this year’s festival too. Entrance is Free for the Dublin Independent Film Festival and the festival will be coming soon to the Light House.
