Kneecap get their picks out for the Light House

There’s a bit of Kneecap fever across Irish film this summer as film fans get hyped for the release of the Belfast boys’ feature film. Ahead of the general release of KNEECAP on August 8th, the rap trio have programmed three films to screen at the Light House Cinema, an early-August insight into the cinematic taste of Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí.

Their film this week opened the 2024 Galway Film Fleadh, with two of the boys in attendance to promote it. Móglaí Bap, described the film as “…all about identity and the language and how young people feel about the Irish language these days and I think there is a change in the tide, how people approach the language and have a lot more fun with the language”.

Based on the origin story of the riotous and ground-breaking Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, the film stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award® nominated Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave), Simone Kirby (Hidden Assets, Jimmy’s Hall), Jessica Reynolds (Outlander), Fionnuala Flaherty (Ros na Rún) and Josie Walker (Belfast, The Wonder).  Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.

Each member has picked a personal favourite to screen at the Light House Cinema in early August for KNEECAP SELECTS. It’s a varied selection to say the least, with cult viewing The Greasy Strangler, Steve McQueen’s hard-hitting Hunger and Irish entry Man About Dog picked out.

The Greasy Strangler is first up, screening on Thursday 1st August.

Greasy Strangler is a strange and weird film, pure bullshit, no one should watch it. It’ll put ye off hotdogs for life. Bain sult as!

DJ Próvaí

Next along on Monday 5th August is Hunger, Steve McQueen’s early hit starring Kneecap co-star Michael Fassbender.

Bobby Sands, the hunger striker from West Belfast, is a local hero in our community. Played brilliantly by Michael Fassbender. An absolute must watch.

Mo Chara

And finally KNEECAP SELECTS concludes on Tuesday 6th August, is Irish classic Man About Dog.

Man About Dog is a movie about West Belfast, in the days before taxi men had licenses, everyone was skint but always knew how to make a few quid (or lose it)
