An eye on AI at the Light House’s ‘More Human Than Human’ season

The September season at the Light House Cinema offers a real celebration of artists and artistry, quite unlike the modern concept of AI and its data scraping plagiarism. During their More Human Than Human season, the Smithfield spot will be screening a succession of science fiction films that explore our relationship to technology, innovation and cinematic depictions of artificial intelligence.

From September 9th – 27th, the Light House will be screening 16 features from across cinema history, from some of the earliest science fiction to this year’s cult hits.

Describing the season, the Light House say:

This September Light House explores cinematic artificial intelligence with a century spanning season of films which showcase the complicated relationship between humans and their AI creations.

Cinema has been questioning the impact of artificial intelligence on the human race and the consequences of playing god in a variety of thoughtful, mind-blowing, action-packed, terrifying and humorous ways for a long time now. This season will not only be full of incredible big screen experiences and a chance to see some of the greatest sci fi films ever in all their glory, but will also illustrate where the roads of technological evolution can lead.

Things kick off this weekend with a screening of The Matrix on Saturday. Action fans are eating well in this AI season, with a Terminator I & II double bill on Wednesday 20th and Robocop on the docket as well. Artful explorations of interacting (i.e. gettin’ with) AI come from different angles in Spike Jonze’s Her and Alex Garland’s Ex Machina. Family films are included, with ultimate lil’ guy Wall-E screening, along with ultimate big guy The Iron Giant.

Science Foundation Ireland, the national foundation for investment in research in STEM, will host a panel discussion on Sunday 24th September, following a showing of Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence. The season concludes on the 27th, with anime classic Ghost in the Shell.
