Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is back with a BANG with more Mobile Movie Magic

Now in its 6th year, The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival returns to the Capital for another weekend of mobile movie brilliance. Taking place on June 3rd -DubSmartFF has the usual exciting mix of shorts, features and workshops, but this time at the beautiful Mart Gallery and Rathmines Ominplex in Dublin 6.


This year’s festival is bigger than ever with filmmaking workshops, a range of short films from 15 countries around the globe, and an Irish premiere of the heartbreaking documentary Everybody’s Oma from award-winning with director Jason Vangenderen.


The festival organizers have meticulously curated an exceptional program, emphasizing powerful original concepts and innovative utilization of technology. In an exciting development, this year’s festival has partnered with esteemed brands such as Zacuto, Dreamgrip, and Zhiyun as well as Ireland’s premier tech site, Goosed.ie. These collaborations will offer fantastic prizes and gifts to fortunate audience members coming to the event.

The festival have teamed up with Zhiyum to deliver a gimbal workshop. Regardless of what brand of Gimbal you’re toting, Keith Kennedy will have some invaluable advice on best practise to use it to its full advantage. He will cover all angles from run-and-gun Mobile Journalism (MoJo) to full cinematic rigs, with tips on configuring your phone or camera and time set-aside for a Q&A afterwards, one of several workshops taking place during the festival. The workshop will be hosted in the MART GALLERY on the 3rd of June has part of the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival 2023. As well as seeing gimbals in action, Keith will have a number of video case-studies to show them in real-world application.

This year’s festival short programme is bigger than ever with over 25 shorts from around the world. The festival team has worked for 6 years to build a community of mobile filmmakers and this is an exciting culmination of their efforts to finally bringing these talented filmmakers to a wider audience.

Everybody’s Oma will be the festival’s flagship feature as it makes its European premiere. Equal parts heart-warming and heart-breaking, Veteran Dublin Smartphone Film Festival Director Jason Van Genderen’s is a deeply personal doc from Australia. A short film maker who found his life changed forever when he decided to turn his attention away from his own business and focus on looking after his mother Hendrika as she battles the debilitating effects of dementia, Jason, his family and particularly his kind-hearted mother found worldwide fame during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 as Jason’s social media documentation of the trials and tribulations of his mothers battle found their way in front of peoples eyes from across the globe.
