Outstanding Irish achievement with 12 nominations at the Oscars

Ireland’s international standing in the world of cinema has been steadily rising since before Film In Dublin even started. The island’s status as one of the leading lights in film worldwide was underlined today as the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced. A wide range of nods in front of and behind the camera alike ensured a proud day for everyone in the Irish film industry, who will be looking ahead with excitement to the awards ceremony on the 13th March 2023.

The stand-out achievement is Ireland’s first ever nomination for International Feature, with An Cailín Ciúin continuing its astonishing run of success. Colm Bairéad’s film has gone from strength to strength over the last year, breaking records at the Irish box office, picking up a slew of awards and now becoming the first ever Irish language film to be nominated for an Oscar. With hot competition including the Best Picture nominated All Quiet on the Western Front, they remain underdogs, but the outstanding and well-deserved achievement prompted mass celebrations today among the Irish film community.

Short film An Irish Goodbye, written and directed by Tom Berkeley and Ross White, also picked up a well earned nod for Live-Action Short. Emotional, earnest and engaging, the short is set on a farm in rural Northern Ireland, where estranged brothers Turlough (Seamus O’Hara) and Lorcan (James Martin) are forced to reunite following the untimely death of their mother (Michelle Fairley). When the pair discover an unfulfilled bucket list belonging to their late mother, their pained reunion takes an altogether different course. The short has been acclaimed at festivals from Galway and Kerry to Austin and Toronto, and its international recognition continues with the nomination today.

Irish actors filled up their categories too, with Banshees of Inisherin leads Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan all going up for Best Actor, Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor respectively, while Paul Mescal also picked up a nomination for Best Actor for his incredible turn in Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun.

Banshees of Inisherin carried the bulk of Ireland’s nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Martin McDonagh, Editing, Original Score and Original Screenplay. The film continues to divide opinion among the Film In Dublin team, but there’s no denying the chord it has struck with audiences or the achievement it represents as a production. Luke continues to make the case for denying it though.

To hear the Irish language spoken on the biggest stage of them all, to see actors each at different stages of their careers acknowledged for their achievements and to have sincere, soundly told stories like An Irish Goodbye gather such momentum all speaks to Ireland’s ability to create films and filmmakers of exceptional quality, a craft that needs and deserves further support.
