Bloomsday Film Festival 2021 will have you sausaged into your seat

Next Friday, Bloomsday celebrations will be kicking off for films fans with the second edition of the Bloomsday Film Festival. This free online event will offer a cinematic celebration of the works of James Joyce from Friday 11th June.

On the 20th December 1909, James Joyce set up Ireland’s first Cinema, the ‘Volta Electric Theatre’ on Mary Street in the heart of Dublin city centre. Over one hundred years later, though the Volta has long since closed its doors, Joyce’s stylistic and highly visual writing is still influencing Irish & World Cinema. Join us this Bloomsday Festival (June 11-16, 2021) for the second year of the Bloomsday Film Festival, the world’s only Joycean Film Festival hosted by the James Joyce Cultural Centre, Dublin.

In 2020, the Bloomsday Film Festival was one of the first in Ireland to adapt to the common all-online format and were very happy to find themselves able to reach a large and unique audience of film and literature lovers that brought a distinctive and exciting feeling of the Bloomsday community to people’s homes all over the world. In 2021, the festival hopes to continue with this success and bring a whole new selection of Joycean Films to viewers from the comfort of their homes. Due to Covid restrictions, the festival will still be remaining online only and all the selected work will be available online for free for the duration of the Bloomsday Festival (11th – 16th June). A selection of short films in a variety of formats will offer a wide range of experiences and outlooks on one of Ireland’s most famous writers.

Having started during Covid, ultimately the festival’s aim is to be an exciting live event, and to marry it with other Bloomsday traditions, e.g dressing up, live performances & readings. Organisers hope and look forward to welcoming live audiences to the festival in the future and for the Bloomsday Film Festival to become an important map-point for Joyce lovers in the years ahead.

Describing the festival, organiser Tommy Creagh said:

We’re really excited to be bringing a whole new programme of Joycean Shorts Films for the second year of the Bloomsday Film Festival. There’s something in there for everyone; documentary, drama, animation, even a silent film. It is going to be a great way once again to celebrate Joyce and Ulysses from the safety of your homes this Bloomsday. All the films will be available on the Bloomsday Film Festival website for the duration of the festival 11th – 16th of June.
