Here, what’s actually coming out in Summer 2021 anyway?

Nature, some might say, is healing. We have a long way to go before the Covid-19 pandemic can be described in the past tense – if ever – but here in Ireland, as time slowly starts to reshape into having the vaguest semblance of meaning, cinemas are set to reopen. Next Monday 7th June is the big date, with some chains taking bookings already, the IFI returning on the 10th, while the Light House Cinema will be back on the 25th.

If you’re feeling safe and ready to return to the cinema over the summer months though, the last year and a half of postponements and cancellations might have you wondering, what exactly is coming out anyway? We’re going to attempt to answer that, with a look ahead to some of the currently slated Irish releases in Summer 2021.

In terms of what is already raring to go on reopening day in most cinemas, A Quiet Place Part II is probably the big one to keep an eye on. The sequel to John Krasinski’s acclaimed and effective 2018 horror has been a long time coming, as one of the last press screenings cancelled before…everything. To the point where Ireland’s own Cillian Murphy is doing publicity interviews, about the last time he did publicity interviews for the film. As a return to the blockbuster cinematic experience, a big, not so loud sequel sounds like a decent bet. At least in comparison to say, Peter Rabbit 2.

Disney’s Cruella will also be out in cinemas from the 7th, if you have somehow managed to avoid the cries of the children/Disney Adults in your life asking you to get Disney+. Award darling Nomadland and animated Raya and the last Dragon will also be available from the House of Mouse from next Monday on.

An intriguing release that will also be available right from the get is Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead. A return by Angelina Jolie to the big screen ahead of her turn in Marvel’s Eternals , this thriller sees Jolie play a smoke jumper, compelled to protect a young boy from lethal forest fires, and other threats that are chasing him down. Sheridan has produced some great and not-so-great films over the last few years, and we’re curious to see where this one falls.

Having opened this year’s Dublin International Film Festival back in March, Supernova is scheduled to open in Irish cinemas 25 June 2021. Stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci WILL make you cry, is all we can say.

Having premiered as the Surprise Film at DIFF, Oscar winner for Best International Picture Another Round is scheduled to open in Irish cinemas 2nd July 2021.

We’re keeping our eyes glued to our inbox waiting for confirmed dates of releases to come in, but there’s plenty of exciting movies that should be arriving on our screens at one stage or another, and we’ll add any confirmed dates of hot releases to our Twitter thread which you should keep an eye on. That includes the inspired-by-Twitter A24 flick Zola , based on the wild story as told by A’Ziah “Zola” King, which we may be seeing in June.

The big screen version of In the Heights, based on the Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is a hit at the moment in the US, and this all-singing, all-dancing cinema from Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu is another one we can’t wait to confirm the release for.

Things might really start to pick up steam in July all going well, with some traditional blockbuster fare on the way including Black Widow, Jungle Cruise and Gunpowder Milkshake. Again we’ll confirm these as we get them, as well as another, eye-catching but less conventional bit of action in The Green Knight, David Lowery’s take on Arthurian legend starring Dev Patel.

You’ll know for sure that the movies are back in August if the screens are once again stuffed with comic book movies, with Shang-Chi of Marvel and The Suicide Squad of DC coming down the line. One final big release we’ve been waiting on for over a year that we’ll hopefully get this summer is Nia DeCosta’s Candyman. The 90s original is available at the moment on Netflix, allowing you to get all caught up before the terror.

Keep your eyes on #WhatsOnSummer2021 at @filmindublin in the days and weeks ahead, as we’ll be sending out more confirmations of dates as we get them, for what will hopefully be a great summer at the movies.
