The latest exceptionally animated feature film from the folks at Cartoon Saloon is set to get an Irish cinema release ahead of it debuting on Apple’s streaming platform Apple TV+. Coming this October, Wolfwalkers looks set to delight viewers of all ages on the big screen in Ireland and the UK.
Wildcard Distribution will be bringing the highly anticipated animated feature Wolfwalkers to Irish and UK cinemas from Friday 30th October, with previews from Monday 26th October.
The third animated feature from the two-time Academy Award nominee Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) and Ross Stewart, co-produced by Cartoon Saloon and Melusine Productions, will have its world premiere at the 45th Toronto International Film Festival this weekend. It has also just been announced for the prestigious BFI London Film Festival next month.
Apple TV+ launched a teaser trailer for the film earlier this week, giving audiences a glimpse of this stunning Irish folktale steeped in superstition and magic.
The film follows Robyn Goodfellowe, a young apprentice hunter who journeys to Ireland with her father in a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the “Wolfwalkers” and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
The Apple Original film is directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart and written by Will Collins (Song of the Sea). Paul Young, Nora Twomey, Tomm Moore and Stéphan Roelants serve as producers. It follows Moore’s two prior Oscar-nominated animated features, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, as well as Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar -nominated The Breadwinner, the last two of which also made their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival.
With gorgeously detailed and colourful animation as always, this looks like it has the potential to be another delight from the Kilkenny-based animation greats. Wolfwakers will stream around the world on Apple TV+ following its theatrical run.
An official Ireland-Luxembourg co-production, Cartoon Saloon’s latest feature was produced with the participation of Value & Power Culture Communications Co, FÍS/Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, RTÉ, Canal +, OCS and the Pole Image Magelis, Charente Region Fun.
