Founded in 2009 by Hannah Neurotica, Women In Horror Month is an international grassroots initiative that assists female genre artists in gaining opportunities, exposure, and education through various events, printed material, articles, interviews, and online support. The vision is a world wherein all individuals are equally given the opportunity to create, share, and exploit their concept of life, pain, and freedom of expression. Every February, WiHM supporters host events (blood drives, film screenings, art shows), write blogs and articles, conduct interviews, and create videos and podcasts for mass consumption, and over the last number of years has been a regular part of the calendar here in the fair city of film. Womxn in Horror Month Ireland are hosting a number of events this month.
This Wednesday 12th Feb, Womxn in Horror Month Ireland will be kicking things off by holding an ‘Attack of the Horror Quiz’ in Drop Dead Twice on Francis Street in the Liberties at 8pm. Knowledge of all things horror (film, art, literature etc etc) will be put to the test. Entry is €10 per team (max of five members) and there are plenty of prizes available for the winners.
Next up on Saturday 15th Feb is the ‘Anti-Valentine’s Art & Craft Market’ again in Drop Dead Twice, Francis Street from 12-4pm. Horror fans can pop along to peruse the dark, peculiar and morbid curios and crafts on display from a variety of vendors.
Finally on Sunday 16th February Wxmen in Film Month Ireland will be hosting their big film sceaming evening for this February. Northern Irish director Aislinn Clarke will be in attendance and participate in a post-film chat with occult specialist and performer Alice Apparently, after a showing of Clarke’s horror The Devil’s Doorway. Set in the fall of 1960, Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton are sent by the Vatican to investigate a miraculous event in an Irish home for ‘fallen women’, only to uncover something much more horrific awaits. The film will be proceeded by a series of horror shorts and will be screened in The Underground, Dame Street, from 5:30pm until 9pm. Tickets are 15€ (for over 18s only) and available now from Eventbrite.
