The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is an international festival dedicated to celebrating works shot using Smartphones and Tablets. Returning for a third year, the festival will open up filmmaking to a wider circle of creatives this January, offering “limitless possibilities in the palm of your hand”.
The Dublin Smartphone Film Festival was created a number of years ago by regular Film In Dublin contributor Robert Fitzhugh with the goal of encouraging smartphone filmmakers to share the stories they have captured on their mobile devices. We also aim to provide a platform to exhibit these stories to a wider audience. It is also a chance to reward storytellers, who are using these devices to push the boundaries of narrative and style.
The festival hosts regular workshops enabling a variety of new talents to take devices they use every day and use them to bring out their inner filmmaker. Over the course of their annual festival, screenings of various shorts will demonstrate the high standard of film that can be made on smartphones.
After a number of years of success on the Dublin festival circuit, this year’s edition of DSFF will take place at the Teelings Distillery in Newmarket in the heart of Dublin City, a venue with a history with film festivals, having hosted Dublin Doc Fest on a number of occasions. The event will comprise of screenings of smartphone-shot films including, fiction, documentary, animation and music videos and a networking event afterwards.
Describing this year’s edition, festival director Fitzhugh said;
We can’t believe the strength of the submissions to this year’s fest. We are only in our third year but the leap in progress in those three years has been astounding. As smartphone filmmaking becomes more mainstream, it’s a joy to see how inventive the films are becoming.
Tickets for this year’s event cost €15.00 (tickets available online via eventbrite or can be purchased at the door).
