Attaboy, Light House.
The Smithfield cinema have today announced the programme for their annual Naughty or Nice season, a selection of beloved Christmas classics and carefully curated deep-cuts. Every year the selection tends to bring out the naughty and nice in Dublin’s film fans as they cross in-laws and distant relatives off their gift lists in order to fit in a few more tickets to treat themselves with and Christmas 2019 is set to be no different. The usual lineup are all there with a few new, intriguing choices thrown in, it’s going to be a busy few weeks at the Light House from November 29th to December 31st.
The season begins at the end of November with showings of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. Celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year, the film will be paired with the specially commissioned short documentary Never Just A Dream. Also having a big birthday this year is The Nightmare Before Christmas, 25 years young, which will be having both a singalong screening on the 7th December and a regular showing also (and sure you can just sing along at that one anyways).
As always there is a festive party for Light House lovers to dress up and enjoy fun and games around the cinema. This year Home Alone will be anchoring the festivities on December 7th and if you haven’t had enough yet and are thirsty for more, there’s also a party themed around The Room on the 13th December as well. The Room is…not a Christmas movie as such, but is it not an advent calendar of the soul, each scene a window peeled back to reveal another aspect of Tommy Wiseau’s self-delusion??
There will be also be showings of long-loved classics including Frank Capra’s sublime It’s A Wonderful Life, the original Miracle on 34th Street and for the first time, Vincent Minelli’s Meet Me In St. Louis (approps viewing with Greta Gerwig’s Little Women not far away). In all sixteen films will be shown throughout Naughty or Nice, alongside showings of a Branagh Theatre production of A Winter’s Tale and performances of The Nutcracker from the Bolshoi and Royal Ballets.
