Fancy Favourites at the Light House’s Costume Drama Mini Season

You are cordially invited to spend this week (whatever blasted day it is) at the Light House Cinema, to have a ball watching the costumed have #drama in a mini season of costumed dramas. In anticipation of the release of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite, they’re bringing some of the all time great period piece powerhouses back to the big screen for a quick run. Though one should never run in such elegant gowns.

The Smithfield cinema is screening some of the most renowned costume dramas from Dec 27th, building up each day until the release of The Favourite on New Year’s Day. There’ll be no shortage of back-stabbing, scheming,  lust and vengeance on display, all the ingredients for a great party if we’re being honest.

Proceedings kick off this afternoon with The Age of Innocence , Martin Scorcese’s adaptation of the novel and personal spin on scandal featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder and Miriam Margolyes. That will be followed by Amadeus , the award-sweeping lavish tale by Milos Forman of Wolfgang Mozart’s innate talent and high society favour driving Antonio Salieri to murderous rage. The cold, mannered madness of polite society is like a flame to Stanley Kubrick’s moth, and his Barry Lyndon has come to be regarded as one of his best achievements. The season concludes with the pageantry and decadence of Dangerous Liasons, Stephen Frears’ take on rich people getting back on their bawdy bullshit, as Glenn Close and John Malkovich try to ensnare Uma Thurman, Michelle Pfeiffer (again!) and more in their tangled web of seduction.
