The kids may be back in school but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a good family day out at the movies before the autumn season really kicks in. The Irish Film Institute has you covered with starting from this Friday with a fun-filled festival of family-friendly films. The IFI Family Festival 2018 is packed with movies and events to foster the young film fans in your life, from August 31st to September 2nd.
The IFI Family Festival 2018 will include the usual combo of short film selections, exciting features from a variety of countries, and special guests. This year’s festival will open on Friday with a special travel-themed event, recalling the best road trips of the summer with plenty of foyer activities, followed by the Irish premiere of animation Marnie’s World. The film follows naive Marnie, a house cat who is not allowed to leave the house and only knows about real life from television, going on an adventure with some crazy characters.
Two Irish co-productions will be shown during this year’s festival: the animated Captain Morten and the Spider Queen and the live-action adventure The Ash Lad will both screen on September 2nd, and models from Captain Morten will be on display in the IFI. Members The Ash Lad’s Visual Effects team are among the guests in this year’s festival, encouraging young viewers to take their first steps into the behind the scenes side of film.
Following the success of the IFI’s Young Audience Award event in association with Creative Europe Desk Ireland and the BAI, during the Family Festival they’ll be bringing back a number of the jurors to speak about their experiences as part of the jury and to encourage a new group of budding critics to get involved. We welcome the competition here at Film In Dublin!
If you have kids that might want to come along but aren’t quite ready to follow along with subtitles in international films, have no fear. The festival will have subtitle readers to help young viewers, including including festival regular Clara Murray from RTÉJr. For a full schedule for the festival and more information, check in with the IFI here.
