Bring your chums to Shark Movies at the Light House next week

Sometimes you go to the Light House Cinema for well-curated programmes and the chance to celebrate the classics all over again . Sometimes you go for the great film festivals hosted there, showcasing diverse international cinema. And sometimes you go cos you wanna see big ol’ sharks chomp down on some fools on the big screen. If that third group includes you, you’ll be swarming to the Smithfield cinema next week like a shark that’s smelled blood in the water.

In anticipation of the release of The Meg, the insane-looking b-movie about a very, very, very big prehistoric shark going fin-to-toe with Jason Statham which is coming to cinemas on August 10th, the Light House have announced a snappy selection of shark-based cinema. Films in recent years including The Shallows and 47 Meters Down show the ongoing popularity of the genre, and the hype for the gloriously silly looking  Meg  has even gotten indie-darling studio A24 looking to get into the shark business:

And who can blame them?

The Light House’s SHAAAARK! season, simply but appropriately named, takes place from August 7th – 9th, with a trio of films that run from the iconic to the ridiculous. SHAAAARK! kicks off at 8.30pm next Wednesday with a showing of Jaws, Steven Spielberg’s classic cinematic missive on whether it was or was not safe to go into the water. One of the all-time great blockbusters, Jaws is a perfect demonstration of Spielberg’s talents, not to be missed on the big screen. That’s followed on Thursday, 9pm with Deep Blue Sea. Director Renny Harlin, also of Die Hard 2 (Die Harder), Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight is…not Spielberg, but his action sensibilities are a good fit for a movie about a scientific experiment that attempts to cure Alzheimer’s through making sharks super-intelligent. Which of course goes dangerously wrong, with exciting consequences for a cast that includes LL Cool J, Saffron Burrows and Thomas Jane alongside one of Samuel Jackson’s most infamous appearances on screen. Worth it for LL Cool J’s shark-related rap alone. Concluding matters on Friday, 8.45pm is Sharknado, the beginning of Scy-Fy’s improbably long-running series of TV movies about destructive tornadoes that are also filled with angry sharks. And why wouldn’t the sharks be angry. Michael Caine famously said of his role in the ill-advised sequel Jaws: The Revenge, “I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.” Who knows how terrific the novelty door bells Ian Ziering and Tara Reid spend their Sharknado pay cheques on are, but for those out there in the fair city of film who love their schlock, they don’t come much schlockier, and what better way to bridge the gap between big blockbuster and ridiculous b movie ahead of The Meg’s release?

Tickets for the films screening during SHAAAARK! are available now from the Light House Cinema now.
