The Nominations for the 2018 IFTA Film & Drama Awards are out

The Irish Film and Television Academy commenced its 15th anniversary year today with the announcement of their line-up of nominations for the 2018 IFTA Awards.

Some of the most acclaimed Irish films of the last year have been shortlisted for the awards, with Maudie leading the way for nominations. Saoirse Ronan will be looking to win her 5th award for Actress in a Leading Role (and 8th IFTA Award overall) for her turn in the eagerly anticipated Lady Bird, while Colin Farrell and rising star Barry Keoghan are both among the nominees in their respective male catergories for The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Martin McDonagh’s 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, a recent Golden Globe winner and hotly tipped to wrack up awards all the way to the Oscars, has also received a number of nods, including the Feature Film and Film Director categories.

Across the Film categories Maudie receives 6 Nominations, Cardboard Gangsters and Handsome Devil along with Three Billboards  Outside Ebbing, Missouri and documentary The Farthest each receive 5 nominations. The Drummer and the Keeper, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Maze and Michael Inside each receive 4 nominations. The Lodgers and Pilgrimage and Song of Granite all receive 3 nominations each while Ladybird is nominated in its two categories.

Across the Drama categories Vikings receives 6 Nominations. Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders each receive 5 nominations, Paula receives 4 nominations, Acceptable Risk and Into the Badlands receives 3 nominations and Line of Duty, Striking Out receive 2 nominations each.

The Academy CEO, Áine Moriarty commented:

“What a fantastic kick-start to the Academy’s 15th Anniversary year with this superb line-up of Irish Nominees showcasing the very best of Ireland’s creative talent, delivering world-class film and drama across the globe. The Academy looks forward to acknowledging their achievements and rewarding excellence at the IFTA Awards Ceremony next month (Thursday, February 15th).

Notably and disappointingly, the Best Actress in a Leading Role – Film category only received 3 nominations this year – Sarah Bolger for Halal Daddy, Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird, and Ann Skelly for Kissing Candice. Moriarty has said that this is  “Because there was just not a level of script written for women, it was a very low number of scripts written for lead women in the past year.” and wants filmmakers and the IFB to address the gap. The years to come should see these numbers come back up again, as worthy leading (and supporting) roles for women are a necessary element for Ireland’s film industry to truly thrive.
