The Dublin Feminist Film Festival celebrates female filmmakers, with the aim of inspiring and empowering more female involvement in filmmaking. The films screened at the festival consider women both on screen and behind it, showcasing stories told by and about women. For four years the festival has showcased great films by women from Ireland and abroad and involved women in film in discussions about their work, and the festival returns November 16 – 18 for a weekend of films that look to the future of women in cinema.
The theme of the 2017 edition of the Dublin Feminist Film Festival is FeministFutures. The films of the festival, which will be taking place in The New Theatre once again, will explore science and the universe science and the universe, subjects with a magical realism, technology and the digital world, contemporary feminist issues and movements, science fiction, dystopia, and the female of the future. The festival is taking a contemporary approach this year, showcasing features that have been made in the last five years, including four that will be having their Irish premieres.
Included in the films screening at the festival are Emer Reynolds’ exceptional space-faring documentary The Farthest, as well as Anna Biller’s feminist love letter to the occult The Love Witch, both films that have received rave reviews from Film In Dublin this year. The festival will also screen a selection of Irish and international shorts, awarding a ‘Best Short’ prize to the outstanding entry of this year. The festival will host Dr. Sarah Arnold as she provides a lecture dealing with intersections of new media, technologies, women’s bodies, sex and sexuality, in addition to a ‘Make a Movie with your Phone’ workshop for teenage girls, keeping an eye on the future of female filmmakers in Ireland.
The festival will be having a Cabaret Feminista launch party this Saturday ahead of the festival, with poetry, stand up, live music and much more. All profits will go to Sasane, a charity that provides support, education and training for victims of sex trafficking in Nepal.
