From October 27-30th, Dublin City will be host once again to the Bram Stoker Festival, a gothically inspired season of events celebrating the work of one of Ireland’s most prominent authors and the mind that gave rise to Dracula. From dance to parades to live performances, there’s plenty going on for vampire enthusiasts, but if you’re batty about film like we are (sorry, sorry), then you’ll want to be in attendance at the films that will be shown as part of Bram Stoker Festival 2017 .
In the suitably gloomy setting of St Patrick’s Cathedral, a rare screening will take place on October 27th of the 1932 French-German Horror movie, Vampyr, with a live score to accompany the film performed at the alter.
Directed by the Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer, the film is based based on elements from J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s collection of supernatural stories In a Glass Darkly. The film is a quiet, atmospheric horror whose reputation has only increased with time. A brand new score is to be performed live during the screening, provided by the internationally renowned composer Matthew Nolan, David Kitt, Margie Lewis, Catherine Sikora, and Erik Friedlander. Tickets for this screening, which begins at 9pm, are available now from the festival

That same evening, for those who prefer to ‘none more goth’ a hole into the ground and get partying before a film, the Light House Cinema will be hosting a Dracula and Gothic Glam party before screening the Francis Ford Coppola film Bram Stoker’s Dracula. With cocktails and some legendary goulish soundtracks and tunes to Monster Mash along to, it promises to be a good start to the Halloween weekend, with the party starting at 9.30pm with the screening starting at 11pm. A brilliantly off-the-rails feat in practical filmmaking, Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula (try saying that 5 times fast with some vampire teeth in) is a lush visual treat, with vivid colours and acting performances from Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins that swing wildly for the fences. And also Keanu Reeves is trying very hard, bless him. Tickets are available from the Light House now.
