September is right around the corner and although it’s caught in between the busy summer season and the winter’s awards season, there’s still no shortage of things to see and do for film fans in Dublin this autumn, starting with a festival of free short films next week.
Now in its tenth year, the Bleeding Pig Festival returns this September. The aim of the Festival is to bring together different cultural groups on the peninsula of Donabate/Portrane under one grouping. In this way they hope to attract a wider audience and appreciation of the cultural groups in the area. All ages are catered for with a variety of cultural events on display throughout. This year they’ll be host to a Pipers ceili event, the Open Mic and an arts and crafts exhibition as well as an art workshop. This year the festival plans to have many new events, a mobile planeterium, a puppet making workshop and ‘Shall we Dance’ in Donabate Golf Club. Fingal County Council will also be running their Resort Revelations during the Festival. Of course, the films are of the most interest to us at Film In Dublin, and after a short film festival at last year’s event proved to be very popular, they’re bringing it back this year, with the opportunity to see short films for free on the evenings of the 4th, 5th and 6th at Keelings Pub in Donabate.
There are plenty of interesting short films on the schedule for the festival, including Maureen O’Connell’s Proclaim!, a film we’ve enjoyed previously at last year’s Fingal Film Festival and In This Place, written by Tristan Heanue, whose next short A Break in the Clouds has been stirring up interest for a few months now. Those of you who have taken interest in our new feature #52Fridays will be pleased to know that opening the festival on Monday will be a programme dedicated to female filmmakers, with all of Monday’s shorts having been made by women directors.
