The community’s of Kilmainham and Inchicore are coming together this August for a festival that showcases the talents of local people and encourages all to enjoy local resources and take pride in the community. The Kilmainham-Inchicore Community Festival is a collaborative effort between the Kilmainham Arts Festival and Inchicore-based groups, who have joined forces to offer a wide variety of events on from August 24 – 27 including: a group art exhibition, a powerful one-man play, an exciting spoken word event, music, children’s activities and, most eye-catchingly to us, film screenings of documentaries made by local filmmakers. The events at the festival including these documentary screenings are all free and it looks like there’s plenty on offer for visitors to have a good time and bond with the local community.
The two films that will be shown for the festival spread the net wide in subject matter, from the local music scene to the ancient city of Varanasi on the river Ganges. Both Tana Bana by Pat Murphy and a test screening of Open Mic Dublin by Alan Morton and Kilmainham resident Conor Clancy will be screened at the Hilton Kilmainham on the South Circular Road at 2.30pm and 5pm respectively on Saturday August 26 and these screenings will both be wheelchair friendly.
In Tana Bana, Anna Devlin and Nora director Pat Murphy explores the lives of the silk weavers of Uttar Pradesh in India, as they work their trade and attempt to address the huge forces dominating their lives. With modern technology and globalisation threatening their traditional work, the locals must adjust and adapt and the hidden lives of the women and children of Varanasi are gradually revealed. Inchicore-based Textile Researcher and Associate Producer Annie Dibble will be present for a Q&A after the screening.
Alan Morton and Kilmainham resident Conor Clancy are the hosts of the monthly open mic night ‘The Jailbreak Sessions’ in the Patriots Inn, Kilmainham. Now through Jailbreak Film Productions and their feature length doc Open Mic Dublin – The Movie, they’re showcasing the quality of Dublin’s open mic scene, featuring lively interviews with local talents and of course, musical performances.
See below for a full listing of the festival’s events. Some events at the Kilmainham-Inchicore Community Festival require booking in advance, you can get more information here.
Correction: The film “Open Mic Dublin – The Movie” was formerly listed incorrectly as screening at the Kilmainham-Inchicore Community Festival where in fact this was a test screening of a work print.
