It may be hard to believe now, but there was once a time when America was under the thumb of a brash lout with delusions of class, a man who rose to power and prominence despite his blatant criminality. Though there are certainly no modern day comparisons to Al Capone that spring immediately to mind, he remains a fascinating historical figure. As it happens, this summer marks the 30th anniversary of the classic film The Untouchables, Brian De Palma’s strongly-casted story about Eliot Ness and his team of Untouchables’ efforts to bring Capone down during Prohibition. Grindhouse Dublin have chosen to celebrate the film’s anniversary for their screening this month, showing it at the Light House Cinema on July 28th.
Grindhouse Dublin have announced that they will be showing The Untouchables on 35mm film, a perfect way to get the real cinematic experience of a textbook big Hollywood movie. Brian De Palma (of Carrie, Scarface and many more) puts his usual flamboyant style on screen in his depiction of the Prohibition era crime world. The director assembled a big-name cast for his 1987 hit, including Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as Al Capone and a Best Supporting Actor winning performance from Sean Connery as veteran officer Jimmy Malone. With De Palma behind the camera and these actors mouthing off a David Mamet script, all to the musical accompaniment of an Ennio Morricone score, this is as Big Hollywood a film as it gets, and it’s best seen on the big screen.
