For monster movie fans on these shores, the anticipation for Shin Godzilla has been building and building for some time. The 31st installment in the Godzilla franchise and the 29th put out by Japanese studio Toho, Shin Godzilla (or Godzilla Resurgence) is a reboot to the series that has received plenty of praise. And now, finally, the film will be showing here, with a select number or screenings taking place in Dublin this August.
After the success of Gareth Edwards’ Western edition of Godzilla in 2014, Toho decided to reboot their most iconic character themselves. The studio turned to Hideaki Anno and Shiji Haguchi, the minds behind the mindbending anime sensation Neon Genesis Evangelion, to direct the “new”, “true” take on the King of the Monsters. In much the same way as the original Godzilla drew on Japanese nuclear fears following the devastation of World War 2, Anno and Haguchi were inspired by more recent Japanese tragedies, specifically the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and subsequent energy accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. The result was a film that resonated with Japanese audiences, becoming a hit at the box office and picking up numerous awards, including Picture of the Year and Director of the Year at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. The film had a successul stint showing in the US as well, and now UK and Irish audiences will have the chance to see it.
Japanese Film Festival Ireland, continuing to bring the best of Japanese cinema to Ireland after another successful festival earlier this year, announced that they will be bringing the film to Dublin. JFF will be showing the film with the Light House Cinema, with a screening at the Smithfield cinema taking place on August 10 at 9pm. Movies@Dundrum will also be showing the film at 7pm and 9pm on the same day.
The Light House have tickets for this event available now for their August 10th screening and they’re sure to go fast. Movies@Dundrum will have tickets on sale soon and when they do, you’ll be certain to hear it from us.
Update: Both Movies@Dundrum and Movies@Swords have tickets available for August 10 showings of Shin Godzilla, at 6.45pm and 9.15pm.
