Hollywood Babylon are dedicated to bringing the midnight movie experience to Dublin. From cult hits to crowd-pleasers, they believe in showing movies best enjoyed in the late night with plenty of beer to go around. But it isn’t only old movies that are suited to the old-school experience. Starting this Saturday, Hollywood Babylon are presenting an extended season of recent films that fit their mould. From June to October, they’re offering the chance to see recent, acclaimed films like The Host and Bone Tomahawk on the big screen again at the Light House Cinema and we have their full programme here for you to peruse.

The Host (35mm screening)
The movie that first launched the international recognition of South Korean director Bong Joon-ho (of Snowpiercer and Okja), The Host is an unconventional monster movie in more ways than one. Hollywood Babylon will be showing the film on a rare 35mm print.

The Cabin in the Woods
Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s super smart takedown of classic horror movie conventions makes for perfect late-night viewing. A group of college kids head off to party at a cabin…in the woods, but not everything is as it seems, and then even the things that aren’t as they seem aren’t as they seem.

Over the Top Action Double Bill
DREDD 3D & Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning
Hollywood Babylon describes this one-two punch of action as “Two of the greatest action movies of the past decade, one you’ve probably heard of the other you might not have, both are excellent and will blow your brain straight out the back of your head.”
Years after the unfortunare Sly Stallone version, Dredd finally did the character justice with its delivery of brutal violence and perma-scowling. Judges Dredd and Anderson battle their way to the top of an apartment building in Mega City One, to remind the fearsome drug dealer Ma-Ma, played with brilliant menace by Game of Thrones’ Lena Headley, that she isn’t the law. Dredd is the law. Meanwhile, Day of Reckoning revives a long-dead action franchise/pay day for Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren and takes it way past over the top and all the way out of its ever-loving mind.

Bone Tomahawk
Barely seen during its initial run in theatres, Bone Tomahawk nevertheless managed to build up a reputation as one of the goriest, unrelenting genre films of the last few years. slipped by with little recognition but it was one of the best genre movies in years. With a gristled Kurt Russell performance at the centre this unrelenting film promises to live long in the memory of everyone who sees it.

The Mist (B&W version)
The season closes with a screening of The Mist as director Frank Darabont originally intended it to be seen, in black and white. Having previously adapted Steven King work in The Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile, Darabont spent a lot of time trying to get this Lovecraftian horror made, and the final result is one of the bleakest horror films or the 21st century.
