Korean Film Festival Ireland Returns In June

Hosted by the Embassy for the Republic of Korea, the Korean Film Festival: Ireland is a cultural celebration of Korea through the nation’s cinema. The festival returns to the Light House Cinema from June 8th-10th and provides the opportunity to see films from one of the leading nations in international cinema for free.

Tickets for the festival are free at a limit of 2 per person, available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are available from Eventbrite and you can check out the festival’s full schedule below.



18:45 –  How To Steal A Dog (2014) – Director: Kim Sung-ho
Ji-so is a 10-year old living with her mom and a little brother, Ji-suk, in a pizza truck. With her dad out of contact after their pizza truck business went bankrupt and her mom lacking a sense of reality, Ji-so and her friend, Chae-rang, decide to get a house on their own. Now, their scheme is to find a rich dog owner, steal her beloved pet, return it back to her and claim the reward.


18:00 – Like A Virgin (2007) – Director: Lee Hae-young
Oh, Dong-gu believes himself to be female. Although overweight and on the short side, he dreams of becoming perfect some day and devotes himself to mimicking Madonna’s singing and dancing after school. To cover the cost of gender reassignment surgery, he decides to enter a wrestling competition.

20:30 – The Front Line (2011) Director: Jang Hun
Towards the end of the Korean War, a South Korean battalion is fiercely battling over a hill on the front-line against the North in order to capture a strategic point that would determine the border between the two nations. Kang is dispatched to the front line in order to investigate a case that’s happened there but gets sucked into a war that’s more terrifying than death itself. As the countdown to the ceasefire begins, both sides become more vicious, resulting in the loss of countless lives until the last man can claim the land.

SAT 10th JUNE:

17:00 – Scandal Makers (2008) – Director: Kang Hyoung-chul
Former teen idol Nam Hyeon-soo is now in his thirties and works as a radio DJ. A young woman named Hwang Jeong-nam sends stories about her life as a single mother to the radio station Hyeon-soo works at, telling him she is going to meet her father. He then finds out that he’s her father when she shows up at his apartment with her son Ki-dong.

19:30 – Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014) – Director: Yoon Jong-bin
In the year 1859, feudal Joseon era Korea is plagued with numerous natural disasters, poor harvest, poverty, hunger, and death. But rich nobles are only concerned with their own wealth and continue to exploit and persecute the poor. In this dark period, a band of fighters called Kundo are a single shred of hope for the poor – and become an entity which instills fear in the unjust elites.
