Last summer, Happenings celebrated the sunshine-however much of it there was-with a series of open-air screenings of crowd-pleasing films around Dublin. From The Princess Bride to the new Irish favourite Sing Street, film fans enjoyed popular movies in the great outdoors. Now with the sun just about peaking its head out for five minutes at a time behind the wind and the clouds, Happenings are coaxing out the springtime, staging their first open-air films of 2017 in March with the St. Patrick’s Festival Ireland.
At the rapidly developing Swords Castle, Happenings will be showing In America on March 16th. The story of an immigrant Irish family’s attempt to start life anew in New York City as seen through the eyes of the daughter, In America is a well regarded film and promises a memorable evening as the latest event at the newly renovated castle.
Happenings will also be bringing a special open-air screening of 2016’s runaway hit Sing Street to the heart of Blanchardstown this March as part of the spectacular St. Patrick’s Festival Ireland in partnership with Fingal County Council on March 18th.
Sing Street, the highly acclaimed Golden Globe nominated musical-comedy starring Lucy Boynton, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Jack Reynor, and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo tells the story of a boy who grows up in Dublin during the 1980s. Forced to relocate to a tough inner city public school when the recession hits his family. He escapes his strained family life by starting a band to impress a mysterious girl. Some instant-classic film tunes ensue, making Sing Street one of the most popular films in the country last year. What better way time to watch it then, than during the St. Patrick’s Day weekend?
Watching a film outside is a fun experience but this is Ireland after all, so don’t forget to wrap up warm and wear weatherproof clothing for if and when the rain makes an appearance. Some seating will be provided, but organisers advise you to bring along seating of your own just to be safe.
Food, coffee and various treats will be available from The Village Markets on these days to keep you fed.
Gates for both events are open from 7.00pm with the each film kicking off at 7:30pm on their respective days.
As part of the St. Patrick’s Festival Ireland, these events is totally free, but even outside space is limited so tickets will need to be secured in advance.
