Dublin’s top purrveyors (that’s the last one, promise) of ‘Midnight Movies’ – cinema best seen after dark with a few tall glasses of water – Hollywood Babylon have announced their selection for their Christmas Party showing. For anyone who’d like to see something other than Elf this Christmas, or something other than Elf five times this Christmas, they will be screening Batman Returns at the Light House Cinema.
Hollywood Babylon describe the 1992 Batman sequel as “one of the most underrated, weirdest and flat-out entertaining superhero movies ever made.” It’s certainly the only one with a penguin funeral procession so far. Tim Burton’s sensibilities have arguably never been shown on screen as stylishly as the film’s depiction of Christmas in Gotham, a campy, gothic, art deco setting decked out for the season and a mayoral election slightly less horrifying than that one a few weeks ago over in America.
If you want to see Catwoman and Batman discuss the comparative deadliness of misteltoe and kisses this Christmas, Hollywood Babylon’s Batman Returns is showing on December 9 at 10.45 , with the usual selection of trashy trailers on show beforehand to set the scene. Tickets are available from the Light House now.
