Grindhouse Dublin is committed to serving up a selection of classic or rarely screened films. Taking place on the last Friday of the month every month at the Light House Cinema, Grindhouse Dublin has shown the likes of Carrie, Big Trouble in Little China and more classics this year alone. This month’s selection by Dublin’s long-running cultivators of cult hits is Rocky IV, a franchise favourite and monkey’s paw user in its wish for unity between the US and Russia. A monkey paw wearing a boxing glove.
Rocky IV was one of the highest earning sports movies for many a year, once again written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone.
After the death of Apollo Creed (sorry for the spoilers) at the hands of the merciless Soviet boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), Rocky returns to the ring in order to restore honour to his fallen friend. But in Drago, Rocky is up against essentially a Soviet weapon in boxing gloves, backed by his Ice Queen wife Ludmilla (Bridgette Nielsen). Rocky faces his most difficult challenge yet in an unsanctioned fight against an unstoppable opponent in the heart of enemy territory, Moscow. It’s the kind of challenge that simply can’t be overcome without a montage.
Rocky IV will be shown at the Light House Cinema, Smithfield on Friday 25th November at 10:30pm.
