With the year that’s in it, Happenings will be showing some of the greatest Irish films of the last 100 years between August and October 2016. This special edition of Happenings’ popular Open Air Cinema Screenings, called ‘Centenary Cinema’, will celebrate the best of Irish film. Guests involved with the making of the films will be in attendance, as Centenary Cinema discusses their work and looks to highlight historical, political, and cultural issues that have effected Irish society over the decades. This Friday, August 12th, Merrion Square will hold host to a screening of In the Name of the Father.
Nominated for seven Academy Awards following its release in 1993, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jim Sheridan, Best Actor for star Daniel Day-Lewis and nods in the Best Supporting categories for Emma Thompson and Pete Postlethwaite, In the Name of the Father is based on the story of the Guildford Four, who were falsely convicted of the IRA’s Guildford pub bombings in 1974. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Gerry Conlon, who spent 15 years trying to clear his name after being convicted for a confession made during torture by the British police.
Director Jim Sheridan will be in attendance on Friday, for a panel discussion before the showing of the film. Gates open at 7.3o pm and the film is set to be shown when the sun sets at 9.15. Tickets cost €5.00 per person and are available from Happenings or they can be purchased at the gate.
A donation from each of the Centenary Cinema screenings will be made to a charity or a cause chosen by the guests and Happenings will also work alongside the nominated charity to heighten awareness for their cause. Following In the Name of the Father, Centenary Cinema screenings will continue through until October around the country, with Michael Collins, Adam and Paul and more.
