Every Monday, Film In Dublin brings you the highlights of the week ahead in Dublin cinemas. Festivals, screenings, premieres, quizzes or even a showing of some opera, get ready to fill up your day planners. You can’t do it all but with our guide you’ll never have nothing to do.
Monday
We’re in the height of the summer now and that means a lot of kids on their school holidays looking for something to do, provided they haven’t yet melted from the heat. After opening last Friday, Star Trek Beyond and The BFG are showing all this week at cinemas throughout the city, including in 3D and IMAX at Cineworld.
Tuesday
The documentary Mom and Me, a series of interviews with men and their beloved mommas about their relationships (tattoos may or may not be involved) has been out for a while now, but this Tuesday at the IFI is a screening of the film perfect to attend with your own dear mammy. At 6.30 pm they’ll be showing the film as part of their Feast Your Eyes programme, pairing the film with a carefully paired menu at their café. Enjoy traditional favourites of the Irish mammy like bacon and cabbage, pie and mash or a freshly breaded cod fillet, the perfect accompaniment to an entertaining look at motherhood.
Wednesday
Controversy has arisen recently over the animated film Batman: The Killing Joke. It’s come to light that the film has added a sexual relationship between Batman and Batgirl to the story. It’s a questionable at best change to the story considering the paternal relationship Batman has with his sidekicks, not to mention a decision that further marginalises Barbara Gordon. Still, those who want to judge it for themselves can see The Killing Joke at the Light House or the Movies@ Cinemas in Swords and Dundrum. It’s sold out already in Smithfield and Dundrum but tickets are still available for the screening in Movies@Swords at 7 pm.
Also this Wednesday are two showings of Jurassic Park at 3 pm and 8.30 pm for the Light House’s ongoing Films You’d Love Your Kids To See series and the penultimate film of the IFI’s Haunted Landscapes, Night of the Demon, showing at 6.30 pm.
Thursday
The GAZE International LGBT Film Festival will be running at the Light House until Bank Holiday Monday and it has its Opening Gala on Thursday night, starting at 7 pm. A drinks reception will be followed by the festival’s opener, documentary Strike A Pose which starts at 8 pm.
Friday
In addition to an extensive selection of films at GAZE, summer season continues with the release of another pair of big movies to start the long weekend, both of them sequels (we have had a lot this year, haven’t we?). Matt Damon’s return to Jason Bourne and Pixar’s Finding Dory are both out this week (The new Bourne first opening on Wednesday) and will be playing pretty much everywhere.
In addition, the Light House Cinema are teaming up with Grindhouse Dublin for a special showing of a B-Movie cult classic, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Grizzly is the tale of a giant shark bear causing havok at the beach state park during the 4th of July camping season. By coincidence, the film came out one year after mega-hit Jaws. And speaking of Jaws…
At The Weekend
Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the Light House, Jaws returns as Films You’d Love Your Kids To See rolls on. Relive the terror on Saturday at 10.15 pm or traumatise your children forever by bringing them along on Sunday at 3 pm. All things considered it’s a pretty busy weekend in Smithfield. On Saturday, one of the stand out events from Saturday is available for free. At 2.30 pm the YesterGAZE panel will be marking the 1916 anniversary with a discussion of Roger Casement, the Irish nationalist who went from a knight of the British realm to executed by their firing squad. They’ll be showing the documentary The Ghost of Roger Casement, followed by a talk about Casement’s sexuality, the infamous ‘Black Diaries’ and LGBT contributions to the 1916 Rising. They’ll also be finishing their series of Studio Ghibli classics with everyone’s favourite flying pig, Porco Rosso. A subtitled showing of the film will be on at 2.30 pm. Finally, the IFI’s series of folk horror films concludes on Sunday, with a screening of The Blair Witch Project at 8.30 pm. With another Blair Witch film being revealed at Comic-Con, it’s the perfect time to become re-acquainted with the original.
Let Film In Dublin know if you’re attending any of these events and have a great week of cinema!
