Who’s That Pokémon? Irish Actors As Pocket Monsters

Pokémon has been going strong for twenty years now, with more games, movies, television series and new monsters than you can shake a Sudowoodo at. The recent release of Pokémon Go has shot its relevancy back into the heights of the original craze of the 90s, sending Nintendo’s stock soaring and getting everyone talking, exploring and in one unfortunate incidence, discovering a dead body. People worldwide are going mad for the augmented reality game that allows them to a) catch Pokémon while walking their dog and b) escape if only for a moment the unwielding horror of everything else that’s in the news right now. The game is available in Ireland now (there’s even an app to help you find Pokémon here) and in the interests of keeping up to date with all the latest trends, Film In Dublin has considered if our best and brightest actors were brightly coloured monsters you can keep in your pocket, which brightly coloured monsters you can keep in your pocket would they be?

Here is Film In Dublin’s team of six. What they lack in balance, they make up for in vague resemblance.

Brendan Gleeson-Blastoise

Everybody’s favourite acting curmudgeon is a strong fit for Blastoise, as one of the best Irish actors around he’s a close fit to the absolute best final evolution of the original game (And we won’t hear a word otherwise). Often finding himself in supporting roles in films made outside these shores, a pro like Gleeson would have no problems surfing you across Route 20 to Cinnabar Island. And yes, in case you were wondering, this does make Domhnall Gleeson a Squirtle.

Robert Sheehan-Mr. Mime

The former Misfits and Love/Hate star has more in common with the confused, calls-itself-a-mime-but dresses-like-a-clown psychic type than you might think. Looking at the characters Sheehan tends to play, they’re both really annoying and they both have a tendency to end up in a box.

Aidan Gillen-Skarmory

It’s all in the beady eyes. The resemblance is uncanny. (Gillen is the on the left in case you were wondering)

Saoirse Ronan-Rowlet

Rowlet was very popular on the Internet aftet being revealed a few months ago. Much like the starter Pokémon of the upcoming Sun and Moon games (Pokémon having exhausted its dual colour naming scheme a long ago), Saoirse Ronan is the leading light of the next generation in her field. And she could probably pull off a bow tie.

Colin Farrell-Corphish

Why a lobster type Pokémon? Because lobsters live for over one hundred years, are blue-blooded like aristocrats, and stay fertile all their lives. Colin Farrell also likes the sea very much.

Stuart Townsend-Rattata

Now we’re not being mean and saying Stuart Townsend is like a rat in any way. We’re being mean and saying that much like Rattata, Stuart Townsend is always kept around for a little while early on before quickly getting ditched for something better.
