What’s On This Week 18th-24th July

Every Monday, Film In Dublin brings you the highlights of the week ahead in Dublin cinemas. Festivals, screenings, premieres, quizzes or even a showing of some opera, get ready to fill up your day planners. You can’t do it all but with our guide you’ll never have nothing to do.

Monday

This evening at 6.30 pm, the IFI screens Tokyo Story as part of their monthly efforts to create a notional film canon. Critic turned novelist Paul Lynch presents this classic Japanese drama, voted as ‘the greatest film of all time’ in a poll of film directors in Sight and Sound magazine in 2012.

Tuesday

It’s quiz time once again at Cineworld as they host their Movie Trivia Quiz. This edition of their frequently held event will be science fiction themed, appropriate for the week that sees Star Trek Beyond released (more on that in a moment). The quiz is starting at 7 pm and will have merchandise on offer from Dublin City Comics and Collectibles and some treats from Pow! Cake That.

Wednesday

In case you missed it this past weekend, there’s still some chances to catch E.T. the Extra Terrestrial at the Light House Cinema. It’s the opening film of their Films You’d Love Your Kids To See season, with showings at both 3pm and 8.30pm. Also this Wednesday, the IFI’s Haunted Landscapes Season of Folk Horror continues at 6.30 pm with the arthouse Czech horror Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.

Thursday

To celebrate the opening of Star Trek: Beyond this week, Cineworld’s Café Bar is hosting a launch party, with games, prizes and more Pow! Cake That as well as USS Cuchulain. Fans of the films can see a triple bill of Star Trek, Into Darkness and Beyond, while those likely to sleep through Into Darkness can catch a nap instead, ensuring they’ll be wide eyed and awake for the midnight screening of the latest installment. Those attending the triple bill are advised to show for the launch party from 5-7 pm, while those going to the midnight showing can join the fun between from 10pm until midnight.

Friday

Beyond isn’t the only film opening in Ireland this week. Summer season rolls on with the premiere of The BFG, the latest Steven Spielberg film, based on the book by Roald Dahl. The BFG will be screening at cinemas throughout the city.

At The Weekend

More from Films You’d Love Your Kids To See at the Light House this weekend as both Saturday and Sunday they’ll be showing Jurassic Park at 10.30 pm and 3.15 pm respectively. Also in Smithfield, the Studio Ghibli season is getting closer to its end but there’s still a couple of films left and this Sunday they’re showing the beautiful The Tale of Princess Kaguya at 2.30 pm (subtitled). Meanwhile at the IFI, their Haunted Landscapes continue to take shape with two more showings of folk horror films. Blood on Satan’s Claw will be on Saturday at 8.30 pm and finally on Sunday they’ll be showing The Devil Rides Out at 2 pm.

Let Film In Dublin know if you’re attending any of these events and have a great week of cinema!
