Women in Horror Month returns to Dublin

Women in Horror Month is an international, grassroots initiative, which encourages supporters to learn about and showcase the underrepresented work of women in the horror industries. Whether they are on the screen, behind the scenes, or contributing in their other various artistic ways, it is clear that women love, appreciate, and contribute to the horror genre. Now in its 8th year, Women in Horror Month provides representation to those women, actively promoting do-it-yourself annual film screenings, blogs/articles, podcasts, and other forms of creative media with the goal of helping works by and featuring women reach a wider audience worldwide. Last year saw the first WiHM event to be held in Dublin and this Sunday, the Liquor Rooms on Wellington Quay will host the event for the first time.

Women in Horror Dublin (which in the interest of full disclosure is hosted by Film in Dublin’s own Sarah Elliott), takes place at the Liquor Rooms on Sunday February 18th, starting from 6pm. The evening will include a number of horror-inspired burlesque performanes, horror shorts and panel discussion, ensuring plenty of variety for horror hounds. Four short horror films will be screened at the event, followed by the trailer for XX, the upcoming horror anthology featuring directed by Roxanne Benjamin, Sofia Carrillo, Karyn Kusama, St. Vincent and Jovanka Vuckovic.

Connie Director Cat Davies – Would-be stand-up Dolly Diggs suffers from stage fright. To overcome her fear, she plans to become a ventriloquist and thinks she found just the puppet to help. Enter bold, brassy, sassy and sickening, the sequinned killer under two feet tall, Connie. But Connie is no ordinary puppet… She’s a living doll. As Dolly and Connie take the London comedy scene by storm, Connie begins to take over Dolly’s life. Meeting fellow ventriloquist, Ollie Bloom, Dolly is encouraged to leave Connie behind and go solo, making it a ‘supernatural bitch fight’ to the end.

Slit Director Pablo Absento – The film tells about a part of a famous urban legend, which is believed to be based on true events. A strange character walking around the empty streets was terrifying locals in the ’70s and ’80s of the last century. Rumors of alleged sightings began spreading around the Nagasaki prefecture, then spread throughout Japan and caused panic in many towns.

Mauvaises Têtes Director Rebekah Fieschi – Mauvaises Têtes (Bad Heads) is a horror comedy in the spirit of classic MGM and Universal monster movies from the 1920s/30s. It tells the story of an odd woman, Jenny, who loses her mind in the search for love and finds the perfect man in her own peculiar way.

The event will also include a discussion on pornography by the Journal.ie featured writer Caroline Ryan, appearances from the burlesque performers Flaming Jade and Gala Grey and a panel discussion by host Sarah Elliott, Dara Downey and Paul Anthony Shortt.
