The Japanese Film Festival returns this weekend, bringing top quality Japanese cinema to Irish viewers throughout April. Now in it’s landmark 10th year, the 2018 edition of the festival will feature a diverse and densely packed programme of films, including work from some of the most acclaimed filmmakers from contemporary Japanese cinema. Probably Ireland’s most transnational festival, this year JFF will be hosting screenings at venues in Cork, Galway, Limerick, Tipperary, Sligo, Waterford, Dundalk and of course, Dublin, as part of a concerted effort to spread Japanese cinema and culture to as many Irish eyes as possible. For monster movie fans on these shores, the anticipation for Shin Godzilla has been building and building for some time. The 31st installment in the Godzilla franchise and the 29th put out by Japanese studio Toho, Shin Godzilla (or Godzilla Resurgence) is a reboot to the series that has received plenty of praise. And now, finally, the film will be showing here, with a select number or screenings taking place in Dublin this August.

The full programme for the 2017 Audi Dublin International Film Festival has been announced, with a very exciting selection of films. Seàna Kerslake, festival director Grainne Humphreys and Richard Molley, Head of Marketing and Product at Audi Ireland were on hand Wednesday morning at the Hugh Lane Gallery for a photo call for Dublin’s biggest film festival, which spans from the 16th to the 26th of February. The 15th edition since its revival in 2003, the festival’s programme was officially launched at Eden Quay’s Laughter Lounge yesterday evening. Kerslake, star of A Date For Mad Mary and one of Ireland’s fast-rising acting talents, will be on the jury this year for the ADIFF Discovery Award. Featuring eagerly anticipated films from Ireland and around the world and a number of special guests, February 2017 promises to be the most exciting time of the year for Dublin film fans, spanning righy across the screens of the city’s cinemas, including the Savoy, Light House, Cineworld and IFI.

As the schedule for the 2017 Audi Dublin International Film Festival continues to be put together, a first look of what is quite possibly one of the most anticipated movies of the year was announced yesterday for the festival’s Fantastic Flix strand for 4-16 year olds. Fans of Lego, Batman and combinations thereof are sure to take an interest in a sneak preview of The LEGO® Batman Movie.The launch screening is set to take place on Saturday 4th Feb 2017 at 11.00 at Movies@Dundrum, with the added excitement of a family-friendly pre-screening festival party at the cinema. Fantastic Flix brings the best cinema for children and young people from around the world to film fans in Dublin from 4th -25th February.

Showing in Movies@Dundrum later this month, Cathal Kenna’s documentary Coming Home is described as ‘an intimate portrayal of the experiences of Irish emigrants’ that explores the concept of home and its meaning to different kinds of people. Ahead of the screeings in Dundrum from November 18-24, Film In Dublin spoke with Cathal about his motivations and experiences of making the film and the experiences of those who have left and returned to this island.

Apropos of nothing, it is quite possible that a number of people who have left Ireland-those in say, the United States of America-may have gotten a sudden urge to return home today. Though you could call that an impulse, the desire to return to the homeland is one that many who have left the island have felt at one time or another, and those who have felt it strongly are the focus of the documentary Coming Home. This film will have a limited run at Movies@Dundrum this month.
