The announcements are starting to roll in for the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2019 and frankly there might not be many more exciting that the news that comedy classic The Muppet Movie is going to be screening all over the fair city of film this February, as part of VMDIFF19’s Fantastic Flix programme.

A Halloween cult classic is finding its way back to Irish cinemas this month. Beetlejuice, newly remastered, will be playing in cinemas throughout the country for its 30th anniversary from October 26th, including screenings in some of Dublin’s top cinemas.

This May, the Cinemagic Film and Television Festival for Young People returns to Dublin from its annual film festival. From May 10th-20th, a bursting schedule featuring 100 events including world cinema screenings, film and television masterclasses, school workshops, Q&As and young critics panels will set out to inspire and motivate young film fans.

Multi award winning actress and Ireland’s own Saoirse Ronan will be presenting her most recent acclaimed film at a special screening in Cineworld this May, in association with the Cinemagic Film Festival. A patron of Cinemagic, Lady Bird herself will be taking part in a Q&A session before showing the film. Just don’t ask what if this is the best version of herself.

Once a year, Dublin’s Cineworld showcases its centrepiece: its IMAX theater, with the ‘IMAX Film Festival‘. The full programme for ADIFF 2018 has officially launched. Cineworld Dublin is home to Ireland’s only IMAX theater. The Parnell Street location has been the place to go for the IMAX experience for years, even inspiring a film based on the subject. On Saturday 8th April Cineworld are inviting film fans to experience IMAX, screening a selection of recent blockbusters at low prices.

Robert O’Brien has been working in the Audio Visual Industry for over 10 years, a love affair that was sparked by his time working in Dublin’s first IMAX Cinema. Sheridan’s theatre was opened in 1998, in the same location where Cineworld currently stands. The iconic cinema was a testament to Dublin’s vibrant film culture which has been a major feature of the city since Jame’s Joyce first opened the Volta Picture Theatre. But just like the Volta, perhaps Sheridan’s IMAX theatre was ahead of its time.

We spoke to Robert about his experiences with the theatre, as well as his crowdfunding campaign to produce a documentary about the theatre from its conception to its unfortunate closure in 2000.
