The sunshine is back in all its glory and that can only mean one thing for film fans in Dublin…watching films, but outside. Two 90’s favourites will be screened in Malahide later this month, as Movies on the Lawn returns to Malahide Castle and Gardens.
We at Film In Dublin like to think that we know what you, the cinema-going public of Dublin, want. What you really, really want. And we know there are loads of you out there who spent the 90s bopping along to the Spice Girls, taking quizzes to see if you were Ginger, Scary, Posh, Baby or Sporty and trying to understand what exactly zigazig ah was and what was so desirable about it, so you’ll be delighted to hear that the Light House Cinema will be showing the pop fivesome’s film Spice World this September.
Director: Seth Gordon Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach Running Time: 119 minutes
After a near-totally negative reaction from critics to his latest film, Baywatch lead Dwayne Johnson took to Twitter to insist that “the fans’ love the movie” and that it was made for them anyway, not the critics. It is entirely possible that Baywatch fans wouldn’t set the bar too high. They did after all keep the television series on the air for 11(!) years, ogling heaving chests as inane plots about diamond smuggling surfers or other such sub-airport novel cheese sailed by mostly unnoticed. A few laughs, some beautiful people and a heavy dose of cheese would probably be enough, but Baywatch‘s biggest problem is how often it loses sight of its own stupidity, somehow buying into itself as though its stories about teamwork, overcoming selfishness and thwarting corrupt beachside property developers are actually compelling. Just like Dwayne Johnson tackles bad reviews with all the emojis, exclamation marks and critic-bashing of someone who unconvincingly insists that they aren’t mad at all, Baywatch isn’t as in on the joke as it wants you to believe it is.
Don’t you want to see this face on the big screen?
Well, that dream is about to become a reality, as Hollywood Babylon presents MONDO CAGE with Face/Off (1997) at the Lighthouse cinema on Saturday, August 13th at 10:45 PM. Cage delivers his performance here with his trademark gusto as the twisted criminal mastermind Castor Troy. John Travolta shares Cage’s limelight as Special Agent Sean Archer, the Batman to Cage’s Joker. Archer is doubly motivated in exacting justice against Troy because not only is he a terrorist, sadist and all round nasty piece of work, he was also responsible for the death of the Special Agent’s son.
