The Light House Catches Sigourney Fever

With a forty year acting career that’s still going strong, an iconic place in pop culture, a couple of Academy Award nominations and major box-office receipts in her filmography, Sigourney Weaver is one of the best in the business to this day. Hardly a surprise then, to see that the Light House Cinema has caught Sigourney Fever, assembling a season of Weaver’s greatest hits for fans to watch over April and May.

It’s a season that kicks off and dovetails nicely with the Alien Day screenings of Alien and Aliens on the 26th of April, an opportunity to see Sigourney define much of the modern action movie heroine in her performances as Ripley. From the 3rd of May, they’ll be screening Gorillas in the Mist, the biopic of zoologist Diane Fossey which scored Weaver a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards. Galaxy Quest will be showing from the 5th of May, the cult comedy that spoofs Star Trek and fan culture, in which Weaver plays the wearied fan service character. Mike Nichols’ Working Girl, which also got Weaving an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category, is showing from the 6th of May. From the 10th of May, you can see The Ice Storm, a drama about a pair of dysfunctional upper class Conneticut families in the 1970s. Directed by Ang Lee, the film features an ensemble cast alongside Weaver including Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire and more. And of course, both Ghostbusters movies are part of Sigourney Fever, with both films showing from the 12th of May.

It’s a great opportunity to see some classic films and some unheralded gems, and a whole season of cinema being programmed around a woman, even a performer with the track record of Sigourney Weaver, is still relatively rare, making this exactly the kind of event in the city that Film In Dublin can get behind. Tickets for all these films are available now, so if you find yourself catching a bit of Sigourney Fever, you know where to find the perfect remedy.
